Date: Thursday 26 May 2011
Time: 7.30am – 8.45am
Topic: Are Aussie kids roughing it? New findings on fibre and kids
Dietary fibre and kids don't always go together. In fact, 50% of Australian children do not meet the recommended adequate intakes for fibre. In this breakfast seminar, Dr Jessica Grieger of Flinders University will share insights on the most important sources of fibre in children's diets from her secondary analysis of the 2007 National Children's Nutrition Survey.
Professor Terry Bolin of the Gut Foundation will then share findings of their new survey interviewing one thousand mothers across Australia. Interestingly, the survey found that 41% of mothers say that their children suffer bowel problems on a regular basis, but that most feel they are not well informed when it comes to the fibre needs of their children.
The seminar will be chaired by international fibre expert Professor Joanne Slavin of the University of Minnesota. She will conclude the seminar by giving her perspective on the importance of dietitians in continuing to educate parents about high fibre foods.
